3D Digital Scanning now available at Abbey OrthodonticsDecember 5, 2017
Previously when our patients opted for Invisalign treatment they would need to have very precise impressions taken. The material would be like having gooey dough in their mouth for several minutes and even then, may not always give all the detail required so would need to be repeated.
With the iTero scanner that is now a thing of the past. The scanner is 10 x more accurate and comfortable for the patient and the need for repeats gone. The handheld wand is passed over all the surfaces of the teeth taking an accurate image of the position of each tooth. When the scan is complete it is then sent electronically to Invisalign where the process can be started to create the patient, Clincheck, computer generated treatment plan.
All the nursing staff at Abbey Orthodontics are trained to use the 3D scanner. So, after the initial consultation and confirmation that Invisalign is a suitable treatment option, an appointment for the scan can be made with greater speed and flexibility to see either Nicola, Lindsey or Miriam.
With the Scans being sent electronically this also means it is environmentally friendly. Gone are the chemical putty’s, disposal of the impressions to landfill and no fuel pollution from courier vans and planes sending them to Invisalign before the process can be started.
Looking to the future, 3D scanner has the potential to ‘future proof’ us at Abbey Orthodontics. It will have the capability to create 3D study models so no longer having plaster cast models for all our patients. In time, this will also free up a large amount of space in the building currently used to store all our patient’s models. Eventually all digital models will be sent to local laboratories where removable appliances and retainers will be made on 3D scanners.
All this is working towards improving our patients experience, speeding all processes up and lessening our environmental footprint – Got to be good for everyone.
